Is Teen Patti legal in India? What the law says and what it does not
A plain-English overview of how Indian law treats card games for money, the 2025 online gaming Act and why you should check the rules where you live.

This is general information, not legal advice. Gambling law in India is complicated, it differs by state, and it is changing. If you need to know where you stand, ask a qualified lawyer.
Playing for fun versus playing for money
Teen Patti is a traditional family game, and playing it with relatives for no stakes, or for tokens with no value, is a social pastime. The law is concerned with gambling: staking money or something of value on an uncertain outcome.
Gambling and the states
Under India's constitution, betting and gambling are subjects for the states. Many states have their own gambling laws, several of them building on the old Public Gambling Act of 1867, and these laws differ about what is allowed, what counts as a "game of skill" and where gambling may take place. Some states are stricter than others. Teen Patti, in which chance plays a large part, is often treated as a game of chance.
The online gaming Act, 2025
In August 2025 Parliament passed the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025. It prohibits online money games, including real-money skill games. The Act and the Rules made under it came into effect on 1 May 2026, and the Rules set up the Online Gaming Authority of India to classify and regulate games. Games are placed into categories: online money games (prohibited), online social games and e-sports. You can read our reports: the Act and Rules take effect and the Supreme Court hearing.
The Supreme Court has been asked to decide whether the prohibition is consistent with the Constitution. At the time of writing, we have found no final ruling on that question, so the Act remains the subject of a pending case.
What this means for a Teen Patti player
- Playing a free game, or a family game without money, is a different matter from staking money online.
- Real-money online play is something the 2025 Act prohibits, and the Act is reported to reach services offered to people in India from outside the country as well.
- Rules differ by state and may change. Do not rely on a website, an app or a forum for legal certainty.
